You get the best app experience when you have location turned on – we'll show your closest chargers and even when we spot a cheaper one nearby.

Finding a charger

  • When you open the app, the 'Charge' screen will show you chargers nearby to your location. If you are standing in front of the charger, you can simply press the 'Charge here' button and plug in your car to start your session.

  • If you are looking for a charger at your next destination, you can search by charger, street, city or places of interest either in the search bar or by expanding your map on the 'Charge' screen.

Transparent prices

We always pass on the network's charger prices to you + transaction fee. With our top plan you don’t pay any transaction fees; without it you do.

If you're charging with Tap often, you can lower your transaction fee by signing up to one of our Tap subscription plans – even on our free plan.

You can easily check charger prices and get a full breakdown of your estimated charging costs for every charger on our network with the 'Price Intel' button.

Starting and paying for a charge session

If you’re not subscribed, we offer pay-as-you-go:

  • Use your Apple Pay or Google Pay to confirm the payment before starting, or set up a debit/credit card.

  • We make a card authorisation of 30 GBP. You can change this amount. Once your session hits the authorised amount, we automatically stop the charging. If you end the session, we immediately pay back the remainder.

Made a mistake?

You can cancel the session if it hasn’t started yet. Tap releases your card authorisation immediately.

  • As soon as you press "Charge here", we send a request to start your session with the charger you selected.

  • This gives you roughly a minute to connect your cable and car to the same charger, if you had not done so already.

  • When the car starts taking power, we receive a signal from the charger. The app will then show your charge session details, and you can track your charging speed (power), energy consumption (kWh) and costs in real-time with every charger update.

Card Authorisation

While Tap releases any remaining authorisation amount immediately, it may take up to a few days before your authorisation amount is visible on your bank statements. Depending on your bank, this may show as one canceled transaction or a separate line for the credit and debit.

Stopping a charge session

  • Time to go? Press stop in the app, or simply unplug your car.

  • We will crunch the numbers and create an invoice. If you paid with a subscription, the invoice will only show up at the end of every subscription period, but your session history will be updated immediately.

Using the auto-stop functionality

  • Tap Electric's auto-stop function lets you automatically stop your charging session when a limit you've set is reached.

  • This is a great way to: stay in control of charging costs, avoid unnecessary charging (and fees), and free up the charger for others.

  • In the app you can set a charging limit before charging based on:

    • Time (e.g. stop after 2 hours)

    • Energy (e.g. stop after 20kWh)

    • Cost (e.g. stop after €10)

  • Once your chosen limit is hit, Tap will automatically stop the charging session

How to use auto-stop

1. When you tap 'Charge here', you can choose to customise your charge session with "Auto-stop settings".

2. Tap on 'Auto-stop settings" and turn on"Use auto-stop". You can turn on your preferred charging limit based on cost, energy, or duration.

3. Once you've set up your auto-stop, tap 'close'. Then tap on the 'Charge' button to start your session. Your session will stop on its own once your set limit is reached.

Tap Subscriptions

You can always sign up, upgrade or change your plan at any time. You can find our subscription plan information in the app.

When you subscribe, you automatically switch from "pay-as-you-go" to monthly invoicing.

  • Pay-as-you-go means you pay per transaction as soon as your session is finished.

  • Monthly invoicing means you pay for all of your transactions from the last month in a single monthly payment.

Some of our plans come with a free RFID Tap Tag. If a charger has an RFID reader, just hold your Tap Tag against it to start or stop your charge session. Even if you used your Tap Tag, you can keep track of your session in real-time and stop your session via the app as well.

Activating your Tap Tag

When you order a subscription with a Tap Tag, you will receive a letter in the mail containing your RFID charge card. When the key arrives, it is not yet active. To activate your key:

  1. The letter has a QR code printed on it. Scan the QR code to get started.

  2. If you lost the letter, or the QR code is not working, open the app and navigate to Profile > Tap Tag charge cards > Activate my Tap Tag.

  3. Enter the ID on the front of your Tap Tag and confirm. Make sure to include the dash "-" in the ID.

You're all set! Your key is ready to use.

Two-factor authentication (2FA)

You can add extra security to your Tap Tag by enabling two-factor authentication.

When two-factor authentication is enabled, when you start a session with your Tap Tag at a location you have not charged at before, you must authenticate in the app before charging. To enable two-factor authentication:

  1. Profile > Tap Tag

  2. Select the Tap Tag you want to enable with 2FA

  3. Toggle Turn on 2FA to require app authentication on new charge locations
